Reset controls in update panel when error is thrown

Hello fellow developers,

A user enters a value in a textbox and i click a button to get some data, but a server error is thrown.

Is there a way to clear/reset the textbox in an UpdatePanel when there is a server error?

If there is a way, can someone assist in providing me that trick?

Can't you simply use a try/catch block, and catch the exception? If an exception is thrown reset it to the old value. You can use a hidden label or textbox to store the previous value.

I apologize. My example scenario was not explained the way I originally thought.

The example should be that when using AJAX you want to show an error message AND reset the controls.

If you write code to 'Throw' a custom error message to an alert window, nothing after the 'Throw' gets executed (clearing my textbox).

So my question really should be:

Is there a way, using AJAX, to 'Throw' a custom error message to an alert window and still reset controls? Either on the server or client side.

Resized image wont show in UpdatePanel

I have a problem with a code where I want to resize an image in a Update Panel but when I fire up my site, I get this error in a message box:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled.

I search a bit on the the what the problem could be, and I didn't find enything than that Response.Write can't be used, but I didn't hear nothing about the others Response methods that I am using.

You can't inject that type of data into the response stream of a partial postback. It boils down to the exact same problem as using Response.Write.

If I were you, I'd change that to a regular image control with the ImageURL dynamically assigned through code similar to what you have. If the thumbnail already exists, your function can return the path/file to it. If not, it creates the thumbnail and then returns the path/file. If there's an error, it can return the path/file of that error GIF.

Hmm.. I thought about your idea but I don't want to have the images two times.

But I got the problem solved.

I made an file called Thumbnail.aspx and in it I wrote:

Hi. I'm using the Dundas Chart Controls in VS 2005. These controls are built utilizing AJAX. I have a basic page with a dundas chart control containing a funnel chart. The funnel contains Quotes, Sales Orders and Invoices. When the user clicks on the control, I want to determine whether they clicked on Quotes, Sales Orders or Invoices and transfer to the appropriate Details Page. I've got the code working to determine which transaction type they clicked on; but, I get the "Response.Redirect cannot be called in a page callback." error when the page tries to redirect. Note: I get a similar issue if I try server.transfer.

Suggestions?

Since it's a partial postback that is occuring, you can't use Response.Redirect. You need to do a full postback in order to redirect or use a different method. See the last message in this post:http://forums.asp.net/t/1165851.aspx

I'm not familiar with dundas chart but is there no way to setup a href on a chart element during rendering? I would have thought this would be a standard feature.

Back to your Response.Redirect problem. When you get a response from the callback can you control the client-side callback function? If so you could use the cookie method as in the last post. If you have no control over the client-side callback function I very much doubt your going to be able to add the functionality you require.

One minor point, if your re-directing anyway whay do you need to use ajax, you could do a page post back when clicking the chart, do your logic and then redirect. To the user the behavior would seem exactly the same as your moving to a different page anyway.

You won't be able to use Response.Redirect() or Server.Transfer() in a callback, check if the control has a client event you can use instead, if that event exists you could use window.location.replace("OtherPage.aspx"); using JavaScript from the client to move to another page.

Response.redirect causing error when used with ajax

I wasn't sure if it was my page not being correct or if it was something else. So I created two basic test pages test.aspx and test2.aspx. I click a button on text.aspx and it is supose to redirect to test2.aspx. This is a basic example giving the exact same error. I did server.transfer shown below. It still gives the same error message. I put a breakpoint in the test2.aspx to see if it makes it to that pages_load event and it does, but the browser throws the exact same error message as listed in the first post. Any other ideas?

I found out were it is happening, but now I am not sure how to solve it since what I have to remove is also needed. I found that it was inside the web.config. I'm adding 2 httphandlers that were needed to fix other AJAX issues. I don't recall exactly what those issues were because this is a big application and it was a while back. I do remember these were needed to fix other ajax problems though. I do not want to remove these and have them break other ajax controls/tools. Anyone know a work around for this. I do know now that these httpHandlers are what is causing my Response.Redirect() issue in my updatepanel.

I removed the following lines from my web.config for it to work.

Shoot, I just realized those were needed for the Ajax to work in IE. And by me removing those lines from the web.config it just does a normal postback and not an asynchronous call. That is why it worked for me. So really nothing has changed. I am back to nothing on why the response.redirect() doesn't work. You guys mentioned that you took the code and were able to get the response.redirect() to work. I'm not sure what in my environment could be any different. I'm running this off of localhost and I do not have IIS running.

Agree, use vs to create a new "ASP.NET Ajax-Enabled Web Site" or "ASP.NET Ajax CTP-Enabled Web Site", and use the web.config of the new site as a template, so carefully migrateyourweb.config into the template.

You can get a template web.config also from a similar path:

Response.Redirect in a PostBack causes javascript error => workaround here

There's a problem in Atlas when calling a Response.Redirect on a postback (and the ScriptManager uses "EnablePartialRendering=true"). E.g. doing a Response.Redirect("otherpage.aspx") from the button-click event code.

There's a workaround, however.

Instead of doing:

Response.Redirect("otherpage.aspx");

do this:

Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(
this.GetType(), "redirect",
"window.location.href='otherpage.aspx';",true);

I wrote a custom httpmodule (acquirerequeststate event) that needed to do a response.redirect in certain cases. This threw the "unknown error" on atlas pages. I added "false" for the endReponse parameter and it works fine now. Response.Redirect("page.aspx",false).

Response.Redirect not working in RC version

I am trying to use Response.Redirect in the RC version of AJAX but it is returning an error. I have found a similar post to this issue and it discusses Beta2 vs RC references. I have ensured that all of my references are pointing to the System.Web.Extensions for the RC release yet the problem still exists.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this issue? Sorry if this is repeated, I just didn't find a clear response in the other posts.

My code basically performs a Response.Redirect to another page in the site when a certain condition is met. I am using the AJAX Update Panel and various button control triggers that are all working fine.

You can't place Redirect in partial postback.

PageRequestManagerParserException waits for data from UpdatePanels (for example in JSON format, but I'm not sure), but you Redirect gives another data. In you case it like that redirect doing at server and PageRequestManagerParserException gets new page.

You must do redirect with some javascripts.

You have 2 ways:

1) use my evalscripts.js (it extends UpdatePanels, that it can evaluate javascripts, so you can put window.open('xxxyyy.aspx','_top') in some Literal in Label, and it works)

2) use ScriptManager.RegisterClientScript static method. On this forum is very many messages about it. Try to search. (and yes, you also do it throught javascript's window.open)

And of course try to read documentation. Maybe something changed in RC1 and there are some new methods for redirect. I don't know.

As a followup on the problem I had. I did omit something from the web.config of my site. After adding this element to the web.config, the Response.Redirect code that I have started working. It seems as though this functionality does work in the RC version at least.

result from web service is what type/object?...

Hi ALL,

At first i was using older version of the AJAX toolkit and the Sys.Net.WebServiceProxy Class was not set. I was getting an error trying to run the posted samples...

Next, i got the latest RC version and updated my toolkit. So far, everything seems to be working great, except the part when the web service result comes back (in the OnSuccess method).

Following the samples, instead of the actual string result i see XML Object. I mean from a simple web method "HellowWorld() as string", instead of a string i see XML Object.

I tried alerting the result.xml, assuming it is of XMLDom object and that is what it is?... Should this be JSON parsed value vs actual XMLDom.

I mean if the webservice returned a stirng, result should be a string, if the web service returned an object with properties A and B, i should be able to access it like this: alert(result.A), and e.t.

Any thoughts will be appreciated!

In my case, instead of actual server time string for example for example i would see "[object]"...

This object returned is the XMLDom corresponding to the result which i could certainly use and go further with my development, but i am afraid that this may not be the right way. According to the documentation, the result should be the actual object returned from the web service, in this case a string...

You didn't happen to put a ScriptMethod attribute on your web service method to change the ResponseFormat from the default of JSON to XML, did you?

Retrieve JSON result set

What is the best method for retrieving a result set and returning a JSON object? I tried using a DataSet, but received a serialization error.

You do not have to do anything special to convert in JSON. The Asp.net Ajax Automatically handles it. But in case you want to some manual proessing use the JavaScriptSerializer.

I am a little confused. Can you provide an example of how to retrieve a JSON serialized result set? Where do I find the January CTP?

I'm having a problem trying to get a datatable from a CodeBehind using Pagemethods with ASP.NET Ajax Rc that was just released. The specific error is below. This code worked with the July CTP. If you have any suggestions, let me know.
